Azmin, speaking to the press today, said the party had bypassed the necessary consultation process in choosing a candidate for the post of Selangor Menteri Besar. |
SELANGOR remains the only state yet to name its Menteri Besar after last Sunday's polls, as internal tussles with the Pakatan Rakyat government hold up the announcement.
Mr Azmin Ali, Parti Keadilan Rakyat's deputy president, wants the party leadership to call a meeting soon to come to a "consensus through consultation" to decide on the post.
He, however, denied that he wanted the top post, or that he would resign from his party if not appointed.
"These rumours were created by Umno and BN to cast me in a negative light as an unscrupulous person to betray his party for material gain," he said at a press conference at the PKR headquarters on Friday.
"I'm confident with the PKR leadership and I will not leave this struggle," he said.
A tussle for the Selangor Menteri Besar post has reportedly been brewing since the May 5 polls between incumbent Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim and Mr Azmin.
Mr Azmin has been opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's right-hand man since the latter's Umno days as deputy Prime Minister before he was removed from office. Mr Khalid is, however, popular with the public.
PKR's other two allies - the Democratic Action Party and Parti Islam SeMalaysia - have thrown their support behind Mr Khalid, even though PKR has the fewest seats in the Selangor assembly.
Mr Azmin added that he and several Selangor assemblymen had submitted a list of candidates for the Menteri Besar post to PKR president Datuk Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. - Straits Times
